If you’re seeking a dining experience that masterfully blends innovation with comfort, look no further than Rooster & Owl in Washington, DC. Situated in the Columbia Heights neighborhood, this Michelin-starred restaurant was delicious from start to finish and was a great way to spend my birthday evening.
Since this was a celebration, we had to get the caviar. This featured Royal Daurenki Caviar, brown butter steamed buns, assorted caviar fixings, and champagne. The brown butter steamed buns were delicate and buttery, pairing perfectly with the rich, briny caviar. The glass of champagne made it an elegant introduction to the Rooster & Owl experience.
Since you were able to choose your own adventure, my wife ordered the scallop crudo with strawberry, nuoc cham, and katsuobushi. I tried a bite, and it was delicious and very refreshing. I went to the opposite end of the spectrum and ordered the steak tartare with Thai green papaya, mango, and potato chips. The tartare was infused with vibrant flavors of Thai green papaya and mango, adding a refreshing brightness to the dish. The accompanying potato chips provided a satisfying crunch, a nice textural element.
For the next course, my wife ordered the tomato risotto with summer squash, parmesan, and Tajín. This dish was a celebration of summer, featuring perfectly cooked risotto infused with the fresh, bright flavors of tomato. Summer squash added a subtle sweetness, while parmesan brought a comforting creaminess. I ordered the pork belly with corn pudding, braised eel, and succotash relish. The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender, served next to corn pudding that added a hint of sweetness. Each element tied everything together beautifully.
For the last savory course, my wife ordered the poached salmon with tomato coulis, potato fondant, and squid. The salmon was poached to perfection, and the potato fondant added a comforting, hearty element. I ordered the chicken presse with roasted sunchokes, Swiss chard, and chicken jus. This was the most unique dish of the night because it featured white and dark meat wrapped in crispy chicken skin. It was absolutely delicious.
Finally came the dessert. We had the chocolate ganache with devil’s food cake, espresso, and caramel ice cream. The ganache was served alongside the devil’s food cake, with a hint of espresso to deepen the chocolatey experience. A scoop of caramel ice cream added a sweet finish. This left us with a wonderful end to my birthday dinner.
Rooster & Owl definitely lived up to its one Michelin Star reputation. Each dish was thoughtfully crafted, offering a perfect blend of the familiar and the unexpected. Whether you’re a local or visiting DC, this dining destination promises an experience that you won’t soon forget.
